Samsung Galaxy software support: how long do updates last?

Samsung Galaxy software support duration depends on the model. Selected phones receive seven generations of Android upgrades and seven years of security updates, while others have shorter support periods. Here’s what that means before you buy.

How many years does Samsung support Galaxy phones?

Samsung confirms these commitments for the models below. Though they’re not a blanket promise for every Galaxy phone.

The support clock starts from the phone’s launch, rather than the day you buy it. Buying an unopened handset two years after its release does not restart its update allowance.

Android upgrades vs security updates

They do different jobs:

• Android and One UI upgrades bring newer software versions, interface changes and supported features.
• Security updates address vulnerabilities in Android and Samsung’s software.

Security patches can arrive monthly, quarterly or twice a year, depending on the device and its stage of support. Seven years of support does not mean monthly updates for all seven years.

How do you check your Samsung’s support?

Find your model under Settings → About phone, then check it against Samsung’s security update list. For the full upgrade allowance, check Samsung’s official information for that specific model.

A phone does not suddenly stop working when support ends. However, without further security patches, newly discovered vulnerabilities may remain unresolved. That matters if you use your phone for banking, shopping and personal accounts.
