Motorola’s still got it: meet our newest SIM-free phones

Remember when closing your phone could end a conversation with a satisfying snap? Motorola does. But while the flip is still around, the phones behind it have changed considerably.

Today, Motorola offers everything from affordable everyday Android handsets to powerful foldables. Its range gives you a few different ways to spend your money, depending on whether you want a built-in pen, practical battery and charging features or a phone that folds neatly into your pocket.

Our newest Motorola models include the Razr 60 and Razr 60 Ultra, alongside the Moto G, G Power and G Stylus 2025. All are sold SIM-free and unlocked, so you can choose your mobile plan separately.

Before the flip: a quick Motorola history

Motorola’s story began in Chicago in 1928, long before anyone was scrolling through their phone on the train. Originally called the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation, it developed radio equipment before becoming a pioneer in mobile communications.

In 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper made the first public handheld cellular phone call using a prototype. Ten years later, the DynaTAC 8000X received approval as the world’s first commercial portable cellular phone. Calling it pocket-sized would have been generous.

Then came the original Razr in 2004. Slim, distinctive and instantly recognisable. Motorola brought the name back in 2019 with a folding touchscreen, giving that familiar design a new purpose.

Which brings us to the phones you can buy today.

Motorola Razr 60: the flip phone, all grown up

The Motorola Razr 60 is for anyone who likes a large smartphone screen but would prefer it to take up less space when they’re finished using it.

Unfolded, you get a 6.9-inch main display for browsing, watching videos and using your usual apps. Folded, its 3.6-inch external screen puts useful functions within reach without opening the phone every time.

Inside, the MediaTek Dimensity 7400X processor, 8GB RAM and 256GB storage make it a capable everyday handset. Its 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation is joined by a 13MP ultrawide, giving you options for everything from family photos to wider scenery.

The 4,500mAh battery supports 30W wired charging and 15W wireless charging, so you can choose between plugging in and placing it on a compatible charging pad. en-us.support.motorola.com

You get the familiar smartphone experience in a form that folds smaller. If that’s what draws you to a Razr, the standard 60 is a good place to start.

Motorola Razr 60 Ultra: when you want more of everything

Its Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, 16GB RAM and 512GB storage make it the stronger choice for demanding apps, multitasking and games. There’s also more room on both screens: a 7-inch folding main display and a 4-inch external display, each supporting refresh rates of up to 165Hz.

Charging gets an upgrade too. The 4,700mAh battery supports 68W wired charging and 30W wireless charging, while the camera setup includes a 50MP main camera and 50MP ultrawide.

For everyday messaging, browsing and social media, the standard Razr 60 may give you everything you need. The Ultra earns its place if you want the folding design alongside more processing power, more storage and faster charging.

One practical point: its IP48 rating doesn’t mean it’s dust-tight. Think about where you use your phone as well as how good it looks folded on your desk.

Moto G Stylus 2025: for people who still like writing ish down

The Motorola Moto G Stylus 2025 keeps a built-in pen inside the handset, ready when you need it. There’s no separate accessory to remember before leaving the house.

Its 6.7-inch pOLED display offers a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, while the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor and 8GB RAM provide a solid foundation for everyday apps and multitasking.

You also get a 5,000mAh battery, support for 68W wired and 15W wireless charging, plus IP68 water and dust resistance. en-us.support.motorola.com

The stylus is the obvious reason to choose it, but the screen and charging features make it worth considering beyond note-taking. If you want a phone with something useful that most handsets leave out, this is an interesting option.

Moto G Power 2025: practical features without the premium price

There’s a large 6.8-inch Full HD+ LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor, 8GB physical RAM and 128GB expandable storage.

Its 5,000mAh battery supports 30W wired charging, but the more unusual inclusion at this end of the market is 15W wireless charging. If you like leaving your phone on a charging pad while you work, that could be a useful reason to choose it.

The 50MP main camera has optical image stabilisation, and the phone carries IP68/IP69 protection.

Despite the name, Power doesn’t mean it has a bigger battery than every other Moto G. Here, the combination of battery capacity, wireless charging, extra RAM and water protection is what makes it appealing.

Moto G 5G 2025: the essentials, sensibly priced

The Motorola Moto G 5G 2025 covers those everyday needs with a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor, 4GB physical RAM and a 6.7-inch LCD display running at up to 120Hz.

Its screen is HD+, rather than the sharper Full HD+ display on the G Power. You still get a 5,000mAh battery with 30W charging support, expandable storage and a 3.5mm headphone socket for wired headphones. en-us.support.motorola.com

It’s a straightforward choice if your priorities are everyday use and keeping the purchase price down. If you regularly jump between lots of apps or want wireless charging, compare it with the G Power before deciding.

Why buy a Motorola SIM-free and unlocked?

Buying SIM-free means purchasing the handset without a bundled mobile network contract or airtime plan. Unlocked means it isn’t restricted to one network.

That gives you the freedom to keep a compatible existing SIM, choose a SIM-only deal or move to another network when your agreement allows. You can compare the cost of the phone and your mobile plan separately, which makes it easier to see what you’re paying for.

Which one would suit you?

If the folding design is what you want, start with the Razr 60. Choose the Razr 60 Ultra if you also want high-end processing power, more storage and faster charging.

If you prefer a conventional handset, the Moto G Stylus 2025 brings something different with its built-in pen. The G Power 2025 is worth a look for wireless charging, extra RAM and stronger water protection, while the Moto G 5G 2025 keeps the focus on affordable everyday essentials.

You don’t have to buy the most expensive Motorola to find the right one. You just need to decide which features you’ll still appreciate once the excitement of a new phone wears off.
