iOS 27 on an older iPhone: what do you get?

You’ve seen the new iOS 27 features, checked your iPhone is compatible and downloaded the update. So where’s the new Siri?

There’s a catch. An iPhone that supports iOS 27 won’t necessarily support everything that comes with it. Older models get useful changes, including more control over Liquid Glass, but some of the headline features need hardware they don’t have.

Here’s what you get, what you miss and whether any of it is worth changing your phone for.

Which older iPhones support iOS 27?

Apple’s compatibility list includes the iPhone 11 onwards, plus the second and third-generation iPhone SE. That includes the mini, Plus, Pro and Pro Max versions within those supported ranges.

The standard iPhone 15 misses out on Apple Intelligence, while the iPhone 15 Pro supports it. The whole iPhone 16 range supports it too. That’s worth checking if you’re comparing phones and assume a newer software version gives them all the same features. Siri AI availability also depends on language and region.

Liquid Glass gets a much-needed adjustment

Like the glass effect but wish it were less transparent? iOS 27 gives you more control over it.

A new slider in Settings lets you adjust Liquid Glass from very clear to fully tinted. Apple has also refined its contrast and readability, making controls easier to distinguish from whatever is behind them.

You don’t need Apple Intelligence for this change. It’s part of the system update, so supported older iPhones get the customisation too. If the design has been bothering you, try adjusting it before deciding you hate the whole thing.

Does Siri improve on older iPhones?

On an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or any iPhone 16 model, yes: you can get Siri AI. Its features include more natural conversations, a dedicated app and the ability to find information in your emails, photos and notes. Those phones may be older now, but they still qualify for the main Siri upgrade.

For the iPhone 11 through 14, the supported SE models and the standard iPhone 15, the answer is less exciting. Apple hasn’t announced a comparable overhaul of the existing Siri on these models. Installing iOS 27 doesn’t give them Siri AI.

Even compatible phones have different limits. The new controls for Siri’s voice expressivity and pace require newer hardware, including the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro models or later. An iPhone 15 Pro therefore gets the main Siri AI experience without getting every new voice option.

What else do older iPhones get?

There are changes beyond the AI features that could be more useful to you day to day:

  • Separate alarm and timer volume settings, so you have more control over how loud they are.
  • Improved search across Spotlight, Photos and Mail.
  • Updated parental controls, including website approval requests and app schedules.
  • Performance refinements affecting app launches, photo loading and AirDrop transfers.

These sit within Apple’s wider system improvements, although the difference you notice will depend on your handset. A software update won’t fix a worn battery or give you more physical storage.

Photos also gains full-resolution sharing in iCloud Shared Albums and the option to save a frame from a video as a photograph. The new AI editing tools are a separate matter: Spatial Reframing, Extend and the upgraded Clean Up require an Apple Intelligence-compatible device.

Is it worth upgrading your iPhone?

If your phone still does what you need, there’s no need to replace it just to get the full iOS 27 feature list. Glass customisation, search improvements and the other everyday changes give supported older models something useful from this update.

If your battery struggles to last, your storage is always full or you’re unhappy with the camera, an upgrade might solve several problems at once. If it’s only the battery, consider getting a replacement quote first.

Buying specifically for Siri AI? Start by comparing the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 range, then check the requirements of any particular feature you want. You don’t have to buy the newest iPhone, but buying the wrong older model could leave you with exactly the same limitation.

And if you mainly use Siri to set a pasta timer, you probably don’t need to choose your next phone around it.
