How did Apple iPhone get here and where is it heading?

When Apple unveiled the first iPhone in 2007, touchscreens existed, smartphones existed. What did not exist was a phone that trusted software, gestures and design to do the heavy lifting. Apple gambled on that idea and… won.
The original iPhone lacked copy and paste, third-party apps, MMS and 3G at launch. But it had a capacitive touchscreen, a real-feel browser and an interface that did not fight the user.
The launch of the App Store in 2008 was the real turning point. The iPhone became a platform people built businesses on. Apps reshaped how phones were used day-to-day, from navigation to banking to entertainment. Hardware improved gradually, but software expansion drove most of the excitement.
By the time the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 arrived, Apple had found its rhythm. Performance increased, cameras improved and the design language became sharper. The iPhone 4 in particular set a new bar with its Retina display and premium materials. This was also when phone cameras began to matter to everyday users.
From the iPhone 5 through to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple leaned more into mass appeal with bigger displays and thinner bodies. The iPhone shifted from an enthusiast product into something almost everyone carried. Touch ID made unlocking a phone became effortless. Mobile payments followed, and security became something users rarely thought about, which was exactly the point. Each generation felt safer, smoother and more dependable.
In 2017, the iPhone X reset expectations again. The home button disappeared, Face ID replaced fingerprints and gesture navigation became the default. The notch was controversial, but the underlying shift mattered more. The iPhone became a device you interacted with fluidly rather than mechanically.
From that point onwards, Apple focused heavily on cameras, video and processing power. Computational photography became central. Night modes, stabilisation and video quality improved year after year. Battery efficiency benefited from Apple’s increasingly powerful in-house chips.
By the early 2020s, the changes have become meaningful rather than dramatic. Many people upgraded less often because their phones still felt fast and capable.
Apple now appears to be moving away from subtle iteration and back towards visible hardware changes. This starts with the iPhone 17 series, expected in September 2025.
The lineup is said to include the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and a new slim model known as the iPhone Air. Design is once again being positioned as a selling point, showing a notable change in strategy. Base models are expected to gain 120Hz ProMotion displays and start at 256GB of storage. These upgrades bring smoother performance and more usable storage to everyday users rather than keeping them exclusive to Pro models.
The iPhone Air is expected to be the slimmest phone Apple has ever made, prioritising aesthetics over cutting-edge specs. This suggests the brand is testing demand for a design-first model that sits slightly apart from the performance race.
AI is becoming a core part of the experience rather than an add-on. The focus is on on-device processing, contextual suggestions and practical automation. This includes writing assistance, smarter photo handling and more adaptive system behaviour.
The iPhone 18 series could bring the most significant structural change to Apple’s release cycle in years. Current reports suggest Apple may split the launch, releasing only Pro models and a foldable iPhone in autumn 2026, while delaying the standard base model until early 2027. If that happens, it reflects a stronger push towards premium devices.
Pro models are expected to adopt the A20 chip, further camera improvements and possibly under-display Face ID. This would allow Apple to remove visible cutouts altogether, creating a cleaner and more immersive front display.
The foldable iPhone is expected to use a book-style design with an internal display of roughly eight inches. Apple is likely to prioritise durability, software optimisation and long-term support rather than rushing to market. This would place it directly against established Android foldables, but on Apple’s own terms.
Chips like the A18, A19 and A20 focus on efficiency as much as raw speed. These gains show up in battery life, camera processing and long-term reliability rather than headline benchmarks. Design is moving towards simplicity. Bezels are shrinking. Physical interruptions on the display are being phased out.
By 2027, the iPhone could return to a clean slab-of-glass look, this time backed by far more capable internals. Apple is expanding production in India as part of a broader effort to diversify its supply chain, too.
The iPhone is now entering a reinvention phase that blends mature software with bolder hardware decisions. The next few years look less about chasing trends and more about refining what the iPhone should be. For the first time in a while, the direction feels open again. And that is usually when Apple does its most interesting work.
