Has Nokia lost quality since the days of the Nokia 3310?

Nokia 3310 is still the phone people bring up when they talk about build quality. It got dropped, thrown in bags, sat at the bottom of pockets with keys and still worked. For a lot of people, that phone became the reference point.
So when modern Nokia smartphones come up, the comparison feels automatic. And that’s where the problem starts.
The 3310 had a very limited job. Calls, texts, Snake – that was it. There was no large glass screen, no camera, no thin frame, so fewer parts to damage and more plastic to absorb everyday knocks.
The battery lasted ages because there wasn’t much draining it, too. Because it was built for a much simpler role.
Today’s smartphones are closer to small computers than phones. And that comes with trade-offs. Phones are slimmer and more capable but also easier to damage. Nokia isn’t an exception here, and neither are Samsung, Apple or Google. Expecting a modern smartphone to behave like a 3310 isn’t realistic, no matter who makes it.
Anyway, under licence to HMD Global, Nokia continued releasing phones through 2025, but the focus clearly shifted away from mainstream smartphones. Most official launches centre on feature phones like the Nokia 3510 4G and updated classics such as the Nokia 5710 XA, alongside more durable models like the Nokia XR21.
While some new smartphones have been rumoured or teased, including names like the G15 5G or King Max, HMD’s confirmed releases lean heavily towards simple, reliable devices rather than chasing the crowded flagship smartphone market.
Why does it feel like “things used to be better”? A lot of this comes down to nostalgia. The 3310 gets remembered as perfect because it did one thing well, but it existed in a much simpler technological landscape. Today’s Nokia smartphones are not designed to replicate it, but to meet modern expectations.
The bottom line is if you want a phone with clean software that doesn’t overwhelm you with features and behaves consistently, Nokia is still a sensible option.
